Expanded Estimation

Estimates are created in Agile Scrum by evaluating user stories, scrum tasks and activities related to release management. Several methodologies can be used to develop estimates throughout the life of a project. The most common estimation method is the use of story points to evaluate the size of tasks related to the completion of a user story during a sprint, tasks used to manage a sprint (i.e., creation of a test environment) or the activities that are required to create a release of multiple sprint deliverables. Story points are generally created using a Fibonnacci series of numbers to provide a standard for evaluating size. T-shirt size estimates of small, medium and large can also be used to provide metrics for evaluating the feasibility of the inclusion of tasks in individual sprints.

Effective delivery of multiple scrums should include planning activities to determine the best estimation process to use across multiple teams and activity types. One team providing an estimate based on story points while the other teams are using t-shirt size estimation, may lead to confusion over the ability to manage deliveries in the time-bound principles of Agile scrum.

The ability to effectively plan and coordinate the types of estimation processes and tools used greatly enhance the ability of the multiple scrum teams to effectively deliver within their time-bound sprints.
