The Roles of Scale
Chief Product Owner – In the case of a Scrum project with multiple teams, there is a need for a Chief Product Owner. This roleplayer is responsible for the overall Prioritized Product Backlog, from which all the Backlogs of each Sprint derive, as well as the complete product deliverable. The Chief Product Owner is supported by the Product Owner of each Sprint and plays a coordinating role. He also makes the decision as to which change requests are to be prioritized at a project level.
Chief Scrum Master – Again this is a coordinating and facilitating role where there are multiple Sprints. The chief Scrum master convenes the “Scrum of Scrums” meeting (SoS), which has similarities to the daily stand-up meeting, where the Chief Scrum Master questions each Sprint representative (usually the Scrum master for that Sprint) on:
- what has been accomplished since the last SoS meeting,
- what is to be accomplished before the next meeting,
- what roadblocks need clearing and
- what dependencies the team is creating that will affect other teams.
Please note that this is not a hierarchical reporting structure, all scrum masters are regarded as being on the same level.
