The different teams should agree on the frequency of the Scrum of Scrums meetings. It is suggested that these should happen everyday for 15 minutes, just like the Daily Standup. On the other hand, Mike Cohn has preference for less frequent but potentially longer meetings. He recommends that although the Scrum of Scrums meeting itself should be budget 15 minutes for answering the questions above, all the attendees should block off Additional problem-solving time however may be required of 15 to 45 minutes for the entire Scrum of Scrums meeting.
This is because any problem that arises from the Scrum of Scrums meeting is often a significant one that could have impact on multiple scrum teams affecting. It should be addressed and possibly resolved within that same meeting.
“Scrum of Scrum of Scrums”
The Scrum of Scrums meetings is generally scaled up in a recursive manner. For example, there are seven Scrum of Scrums meetings happening within the organization. Each of those Scrum of Scrums meeting has a representative of their own. When the representatives of those seven Scrum of Scrums meeting convene, their work is coordinated in an even higher-level meeting called the Scrum of Scrum of Scrums. As pointed out by Mike Cohn, “Scrum of Scrum of Scrums” can sound silly at some point, especially when having to roll up to another higher-level meeting. Calling these higher-level meetings just “Scrum of Scrums” will suffice and will be understood by everybody.
