3. Definition of risks- the risks of the project are defined in the initiation phase. Risks determine how a project will be managed and how the iterations will be scheduled, hence the need for defining them. The risks with the highest priority are addressed early during project development while the ones with lowest priority are addressed later during project development. Failure to address a higher priority risk will subject the project into a danger. The ways of mitigating the risks are also defined in this phase.

4. Development of business case- this is important for definition of the worthwhile of a project from the perspective of the business. If the project is not found to be worthwhile, then it should be cancelled. The business case should clearly indicate how the project will map to the enterprise model of the business.

5. Preparation of the project environment- the team needs some workspace which should be reserved, and this is done during the initiation phase. The people who will take part in the project development are requested during this phase, and any hardware and software necessary for the development of the project acquired. The tools which needed immediately have to be obtained, while the ones to be used in the later stages are compiled in a list.
