Outline the methods of communication you will use.
The methods you use to communicate with your team will vary depending on the type of team you have (more on that later). However, your Scrum meetings serve as a core and consistent method of communication. Your backlog refinement and planning meetings will serve as methods to communicate project needs, details, and sprint planning.
Daily scrum meetings will allow your team to communicate priorities and any roadblocks they’re experiencing, as well as give people the opportunity to redefine project priorities and hold team members accountable for their work. Team members do not just communicate, but show what they’ve completed. Lastly, the Sprint Retrospective is your opportunity to communicate and work through the mishaps from the last sprint so that future sprints will run more efficiently, moving forward.
There are other modes of communication to consider that can help tremendously.
- Remote teams will likely rely heavily on conference chat and video conferencing tools to maintain consistent and efficient communication. Some tools that teams use vary from Slack, HipChat, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts. What you choose will depend on what features you need, the size of your budget, and the size of your team.
- Sprint backlog is a real-time communication tool that illustrates current status and how effectively sprints are being accomplished.
- Face-to-face communication can be particularly effective when problems need to be solved quickly. While this isn’t always an option for remote or international teams, getting face time with team members can prove to be effective.
