Automated Testing

Automated testing is the umbrella term to describe the use of programs to automatically run tests. Automated tests can also be used for many different kinds of tests, including unit testing, functional testing, and performance testing. Depending on the maturity of the project, automating regression tests is a highly-recommended approach to regression testing. Given the short development cycles, it will save a lot of time and effort, compared to manually run tests.

Exploratory testing

Exploratory testing is an approach where the tester is simultaneously planning, analysing, designing, and executing tests as they navigate around the application. Actions to be taken will depend on the tester’s thought process, which can be useful for getting feedback on the application’s usability. Exploratory testing can also uncover bugs not covered by test cases, especially when the tester is new to the application.

Choosing regression test approaches will depend on numerous project factors such as scale, time frame, team capacity, maturity, and application type. It will benefit the team to have more than one approach, in order to increase the tested coverage of the system.

Handling bugs found during Regression Testing

Regression bugs, just like any other bug, are subject to impact analysis and prioritisation. Depending on how critical they are, they should be assessed on whether they are release-stopping or not. Release stoppers must be fixed immediately. Bugs that are determined to not be release-stoppers can be fixed in a later Sprint, depending on their priority. Scrum teams must anticipate to find critical bugs during regression testing and plan their releases accordingly.

Given the continuous nature of delivering features in Agile projects, it is important for teams to have sound practices in place to ensure product quality. Having an effective Regression Testing Strategy means having cost-effective and efficient test approaches that have enough variety to catch different issues and have more coverage of the application.
